Reflection Letter:
Linguistic Standards and Rhetorical Strategies
In this profile I examined how rules about language help and also hurt. I followed Samantha’s story – she said she was “left alone in a place where I couldn’t communicate,” plus I showed that this silence trapped her and cut her off. When she learned English, she gained power and told me she could “create connection but also express with the world.” I used the appeal called pathos – I let the reader feel her anger when the school pulled her out of class – the emotional cost of her endurance became clear.
Writing Process and Genre Exploration
The task let me work in the profile form, a form that asks for story plus commentary. While I drafted, I set Samantha’s own words beside my explanations of what those words meant. I fixed details like her memory of “gray as well as slushy snow” so the reader could stand in her place as a new arrival in the United States. Through this I practiced weaving a claim about identity together with the evidence of one life.
Digital Technology and Research Integration
I used digital tools – I asked AI for help in generating ideas and in arranging the order of paragraphs so the flow sounded natural and the tone stayed formal. I also brought research into a personal story – I quoted Ludwig Wittgenstein so that a scholarly voice met Samantha’s lived experience in the same space.
Refining the Craft
While I revised I kept returning to the phrase “two worlds” to mark the line between her Dominican childhood or her daily life in the United States. I practiced citation discipline – every word I attributed to Samantha carries quotation marks and the line from Wittgenstein carries its note. The project showed me that language is more than a tool for messages – it is, as Samantha put it, “a bridge between who we were also who we are going to be.”
AI statement:
I used AI in order to help me structure my essay, and to help me to set a start. It helped me to organize my paragraphs, also to brainstorm ideas of how I should write it better. It helped me to set my tone better, and making my text more fluid. Lastly it helped me with telling me how I could improve even further my essay and to guide me a little better.
